Early Registration For Fall 1 & 2 Hikes Opens on Monday, July 25th

In-person and phone-in early registration for Fall 1 and Fall 2 College of Marin Community Education classes, including the Fall 1 & 2 Meandering in Marin hikes, will open for current Gold Card members next Monday, July 25 and continue through next Thursday, July 28.

 College of Marin office hours for next week are:

• Monday, July 25: 9am-Noon, 1-4pm
• Tuesday, July 26: 9am-Noon, 1-4pm
• Wednesday, July 27: Closed in the morning. Open 1-4pm.
• Thursday, July 28: 9am-Noon, 1-4pm
• Friday, July 29: Closed (summer hours)

Please stop by one of the college's offices---Kentfield or Indian Valley Campus---to register with Dolly Bedi or Heather Peitz or call to register over the phone: 415-485-9305. 

Online registration, and registration for those who aren't ESCOM Gold Card members, begins Monday, August 1st.

Angel Island Hike (7/19) Preview

Angel Island State Park is the destination for our next summer hike.  Here's Wendy's description of the outing: "Angel Island is often good for butterflies like Anise Swallowtails, Western Tiger Swallowtails, California Sisters, and Pipevine Swallowtails."

We'll meet at the ferry dock is at 21 Main Street at 9:50 a.m..

Allow time to park and don't miss the boat! (Although it's only 10-minute trip, the next ferry doesn't run until 11:00 a.m.).

Parking gets more expensive the closer you get to the ferry. There is sometimes on-street free parking if you make a left on Mar West, the corner the library is on. (See map at left). Allow ten minutes to walk (click here to view and print Mapquest walking directions) from there to the ferry.

Directions to the ferry dock: We'll take the 10 a.m. ferry from Tiburon to the island. Bring cash or check to pay for the ferry ($14.00 for Seniors, $15 for adults, round trip, pay as you board). (Bring $20 in cash or check for Wendy, too!)

Here is a map of parking lots (cash only, no credit or debit cards, accepted) and the ferry dock provided by the Angel Island Conservancy:

We'll take the last ferry of the day back at 3:30 p.m.

Weather forecast: As Wednesday, July 13th, the National Weather Service forecast for Angel Island for Tuesday's hike was mostly sunny, with a high near 66. (Click here for an updated forecast).

Thinking About Hiking The Pacific Crest Trail?

If you're thinking about going "Wild" and following in the footsteps of author Cheryl Strayed to hike all or a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail, plan on attending a presentation about trekking that route that will be given from 7-8:30 p.m. on August 31st at the REI Corte Madera by Dick Jordan's travel writing colleague, Susan Alcorn and her husband, Ralph.

Although Strayed's book, "Wild," (and the movie of the same name) are the most recent PCT memoirs, Dick recommends reading Dan White's "The Cactus Eaters: How I Lost My Mind and Almost Found Myself on the Pacific Crest Trail" to help you decide if you are up to long-distance mountain and desert hiking, or just for entertainment. You can get the book from Marin County libraries.

Tomales Bay SP Shell Beach Shuttle Hike (7/12) Preview

Something old and something new!

We’ll hike from (but not meet at) the same parking lot on Pierce Point Road that’s just before the turn to Heart’s Desire.  Last year there were ripe huckleberries! Wetland plants like Marsh Rosemary, Ledum and Jaumea should be in bloom.

Directions to the trailhead: Meet at the Shell Beach parking lot, not at the trailhead (we’ll carpool to it from the Shell Beach lot).

No restrooms at trailhead; stop at the Bear Valley Visitors Center on the way if you need to powder your nose.

After you pass Inverness, take a right on Camino del Mar (there’s an inn on your left; it’s just where the road starts going uphill.) Follow it to the parking lot. (Click here for a MapQuest map for driving time and directions to this area from your location.)

Meet at 9:00 am to carpool from St. Rita.
