I wasn't surprised, but it was interesting to see five species of butterflies today.  I'll show all five below so you can compare them.  (Note: All five species can overwinter as adults in this area, hence their brief appearances on warm days.  In contrast, many other butterfly species overwinter as caterpillars or pupae.)   Monarch (Danaus plexippus)    West Coast Lady (Vanessa annabella)  Satyr Anglewing (Polygonia satyrus)   California Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis californica)     Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta)

Spring Hike Registration Begins Monday, Feb 26th

Registration for the College of Marin Community Education courses, including the Meandering in Marin Spring series, begins at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, February 26th.

The Spring Catalog does not come out until 2/2/6/18.

IJ to air program on Marin wildfire risk

IJ to air program on Marin wildfire risk 

An hourlong "IJ Forums" panel discussion on Marin’s vulnerability to devastating wildfire will air on community television beginning Thursday.

The program, recorded by the Community Media Center of Marin, features host Dick Spotswood in conversation with Marin Supervisor Katie Rice, fire ecologist Ray Moritz and FireSafe Marin coordinator Todd Lando.

The program, edited for broadcast, also includes questions and comments from audience members who attended the Jan. 24 session at Corte Madera Town Hall.

The program is posted on marinij.com and will be broadcast on Comcast Channel 26 and AT& T Uverse Channel 99 on the following schedule: 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1; 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3; 6 p.m. Feb. 15; and 5 p.m. Feb. 17.

Sky Trail Hike (February 6, 2018) Preview

For the second hike of Winter 2018, we'll go to Point Reyes National Seashore for the Sky Trail Hike. Here's Wendy's description of the outing:

"This loop has spectacular views of the estero and the ocean! This could be a good mushroom hike. Lunch on Mt. Wittenberg. Level and downhill after lunch. "

Directions: Take Sir Francis Drake Boulevard west to Olema. Turn right on Route 1, then make an immediate left onto Bear Valley Road. Continue past Park Headquarters (stop here if you need a restroom), and go left on Limantour Road. The trailhead is 3.3 miles from this turn. The parking lot is on your left. 

50 minutes from College of Marin. No restrooms at trailhead. We'll pass some at Sky Camp about 10:30 am.
