Meandering in Marin is a series of hikes offered as a class by the Community Education section of the College of Marin from Fall through Spring. Three different sections of the group meet once a week on either Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday.
The hikes continue on a week-by-week, pay-as-go basis during Winter and Summer when the College is not in session.
WENDY DRESKIN (Hike Leader) has been teaching the popular class Meandering in Marin through the College of Marin since 1998. She taught for Terwilliger Nature Education (now WildCare) in the early ‘90s, and currently teaches nature education classes for children at various elementary schools in Marin County. She served as Education Chair for the Marin Chapter of the California Native Plant Society, and created the Junior Botanist program which reaches over 300 children in schools around the county each year. In recognition of her work inspiring both children and adults, she was honored with the Terwilliger Environmental Award in 2003.
Wendy’s husband, William Dreskin, is an award-winning fine art and nature photographer and artist, and his works have appeared in calendars and have been exhibited in numerous galleries and national exhibitions. His photographs and paintings are in private and corporate collections in the US and Europe. You can see his work at www.dreskinfineart.com and at www.marinmoca.org.
WALTER DRUCKER (Photographer) and his wife, Janet, started Meandering in Marin in 2009. He now brings his "Point and Shoot" camera along and contributes photos to the Meandering on-line albums.
Sometimes Walter and Janet bring Earl The Pup with them hiking. Earl helps Walter sniff out great "Photo Ops" during the hike. Since Earl eschews eating lunch while one the trail, he makes sure that the group does not doddle too long in any one spot so that the hike can be finished on time and he can get home and back to his dog biscuits.
THERESA FISHER (Photographer) spent 37 years behind a desk working for the National Park Service then decided it was time to change paths and perhaps start walking on a few.
So in 2007 she retired and immediately learned: "This is the way it was always meant to be." She discovered Meandering in the Spring of 2008, got hooked, and began bringing her camera along to capture some of the images. It has since become an obsession! Thanks to this magnificent obsession, the Tuesday Meanderers now enjoy the many photos she contributes to the blog and its on-line photo albums.
AL GRUMET (Photographer) and his wife, Sonia Lee, joined the Tuesday Meanders in February of 2011. They have traveled widely and both are experienced photographers.
While the rest of us tote point-and-shoot camera, Al carries a digital single-lens reflex camera.
Like Dick Jordan, Al started out shooting black and white photos before moving on to color. Look for his photos in both genres in the Meandering photo albums.
DICK JORDAN (Blog Editor) grew up in Seattle, Washington, but has lived in San Anselmo since 1975. He joined Wendy's Tuesday hiking group in January of 2008, two days before he "officially retired" from his day job. From time to time he works as a volunteer tour guide at the Bay Model Visitor Center in Sausalito.
In 2006, Dick started writing travel blogs so friends and family could follow the vacation journeys he and his wife Cindy embark on each year. Three years later, he officially embarked on a new career as a freelance travel writer. His stories have appeared in the Travel sections of the Dallas Morning News, Los Angeles Times, Marin I-J, Oakland Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle and San Jose Mercury News.
TED RATHBUN (Photographer) is the latest photojournalist to join the Meandering in Marin on Tuesdays "press corp" although he is a "veteran" of the Tuesday group.
With the long telephone lens on his SLR he can easily out-zoom Theresa Fisher and Dick Jordan with their itty-bitty point and shoot cameras. He'll be able to capture "up close and personal" shots of wildlife to help illustrate the recaps of our hikes.
