Just a reminder from the blog (per Christina's e-mail) that several lines of evidence lead to the conclusion that Anamas (in present day Mill Valley) was the birthplace of Chief Marin, known today as a "leader, rebel and legend" in the fascinating Miwok history, documented by well-known archaeologist Betty Goerke in her book, "Chief Marin" which is available at Marin County public libraries. (Click here to read a March 2007 Marin I-J article about Goerke and her book).
A plaque is to be dedicated at his birthplace, celebrating a major event in Mill Valley/Marin history. The date is Friday, May 8, 2009. The time is 1:00 - 1:45 pm. The location, 42 Locust Avenue, Mill Valley. (Click here to view and print a Google Map).
The street will be closed during the ceremony to mark the importance of the event in Mill Valley history. John Leonard, president of the Mill Valley Historical Society will be present as will Betty Goerke who will talk briefly about the village of Anamas. Members of the Miwok tribe will be present. The tribal chairman, Greg Sarris will speak. A tribal member will lead the group in a Miwok prayer. Some third grade classes from Mill Valley public schools will be present. The public is warmly encouraged to attend.
